Starting with NUMBER SENSE
I will add to the outcomes as we learn/ work on them! These are the ones we will be starting with:
Overall Objective/ Learning Goal: To develop a clear understanding of numbers and how to work with them.
Big Question: What is Number Sense and why is it important for me to have Number Sense?
Outcomes/ Goals:
-
I can demonstrate an understanding of integers, concretely, pictorially and symbolically
-
I can demonstrate an understanding of Place Value, including numbers that are greater than one million.
-
I can solve problems involving whole numbers.

Exploring our Global Community through mathematical application (student-generated questions!)
An average Canadian produces about 5 pounds of garbage per day. There are 365 days a year. How much garbage does an average Canadian produce (approximately) per year?
Extension: If an average Canadian family has 3-5 people in it, how much garbage does an average family produce per year?
An average American produces 254 000 000 000 lbs of textiles each year. Canadians produce 31 000 000 000 lbs. How much more lbs of textiles do Americans produce than Canadians? Explain your thinking.
The whole world puts 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year.
Over the course of 8 years, how much carbon dioxide will be in the atmosphere?
The average horse drinks about 7 gallons of water per day. So how much water will it drink in 3 weeks?
A four pound rabbit drinks about 1 cup of water a day. So how many cups would it drink in 4 weeks?
If Canada has 7% of the world's renewable fresh water then how much water does the rest of the world have?
On average, a person from Canada uses about 91 gallons of water a day and a person from Africa uses about 12 gallons of water a day. What's the difference?
